July 2026 Case Study: How Buying Better Builds a Better World

Each month, the SDG community highlights one goal to inspire global action. This July, however, the focus is on all goals, a moment to reflect on the scale, ambition, and interconnected nature of the 2030 Agenda. As countries accelerate toward the finish line, one insight is becoming impossible to ignore:

Public procurement is one of the single most powerful, cross‑cutting levers for achieving the SDGs, impacting up to 70% of them.

A new peer‑reviewed synthesis published in the Management of Sustainable Development Journal makes this case unmistakably clear. After reviewing 29 scientific articles on sustainable public procurement (SPP), the authors conclude that procurement is not just an administrative function, it is a strategic engine capable of shaping environmental policy, social inclusion, economic resilience, and governance integrity. Because governments purchase nearly everything such as food, energy, water systems, IT infrastructure, sanitation services, procurement decisions ripple across all sectors.

The article identifies four procurement principles that drive SDG achievement:

• Green procurement

• Probity & ethical procurement

• Transparency & fairness

• Accountability

As we spotlight all SDGs this July, one message stands out:

If governments align procurement with sustainability, equity, and accountability, they accelerate more SDGs at once than nearly any other policy tool.

Together, these principles influence 12 of the 17 SDGs, making procurement one of the broadest SDG accelerators in government, and one of the most important mechanisms governments have, to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
