July 2025 Case Study: The Methodology for Assessing Procurement Systems (MAPS) and SDG 17
This month's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, which focuses on strengthening global cooperation to achieve sustainable development. SDG 17 recognizes that achieving the other 16 goals requires strong partnerships between governments, the private sector, civil society, and international organizations.
One powerful example of how public procurement advances this goal is the Methodology for Assessing Procurement Systems (MAPS). Developed jointly by the OECD, World Bank, bilateral donors, and partner countries, it represents a global partnership in action. MAPS provides a standardized framework that enables governments, civil society, and development partners to assess procurement systems, share knowledge, and coordinate reforms.
By creating a common language and platform for dialogue, MAPS mobilizes international expertise and resources, helping countries build stronger, more transparent, and sustainable procurement systems. This directly contributes to SDG 17 by promoting capacity building, policy coherence, knowledge sharing, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
