SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure is the focus of this month, and we are highlighting the UNEP policy brief "Driving Sustainability Through Public Procurement of Infrastructure".
The brief shows that public procurement is a critical driver of SDG 9. Governments finance most infrastructure projects, giving them the leverage to embed sustainability from the very start. By applying tools such as life cycle costing, performance-based specifications, sustainability certifications, and social value criteria, procurement can ensure that infrastructure is resilient, low-carbon, inclusive, and innovation-driven.
In this way, public procurement transforms infrastructure delivery into a powerful enabler of SDG 9 targets.
